Situated in the Regency of Mahakam Ulu within the Province of East Kalimantan and embraced by the Borneo Lowland Rain Forest Ecoregion, this forest which spans for 36,500 ha serves as a manifestation of our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. Showcasing the remarkable biodiversity inherent to this corner of the world, the forest significantly contributes to the broader biome of Tropical & Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests.
Except for its North-West side which borders with a protected area of the neighboring province of Central Kalimantan, this forest is surrounded on all other sides by palm oil companies which have razed all standing trees level with the ground to make way for monoculture plantations. It is only thanks to its rugged and hilly terrain, most of the western area of this forest is impassable by humans and thus free from encroachment. Slated as a timber production forest, the area potentially harbors some of the most vulnerable species only found on this corner of the world, such as Bornean hornbills and sun bears, as signs of their presence were confirmed by our ground team during forest inventory studies. Sparing the old-growth trees in this forest from chainsaw means preventing the release of hundreds of thousands of metric tons of CO2 every year into the atmosphere.

Borneo (Indonesian: Kalimantan) is the third largest island in the world and most of its water resources come from a special area called Heart of Borneo. Spanning over Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, Heart of Borneo covers one third of the island and provides vital fresh water resources to more than seventy percent of Borneo.
Our forest which is in the proximity of Heart of Borneo, if not even part of it, plays an essential role in supporting the whole ecological system of the Mahakam River. In fact, the word Ulu in the name of the Regency where the forest is located, which is Mahakam Ulu, means nothing else than upstream.
A successful project is defined by more than a high amount of CC, for us the social & biodiversity impact is at least as important.
We aim to contribute to the following 7 SDGs in our Indonesia project.
